Reducing your sugar intake

Have you ever thought about giving up sugar but not really sure where to start? Don’t worry as you’re not alone. The world health organisation have written guidelines on sugar intake so now is the prefect time for trying to reduce and cutback on sugar.

I try to limit the amount of sugar I consume, not only in the form of regular sugar but also the hidden sugars found in processed and ready made foods. One of the easiest ways of cutting back on sugar is to begin by making your meals from scratch, you’ll be shocked at the amount of sugar that goes into savoury foods that you wouldn’t even consider adding if you were cooking your family meal. Making foods from scratch will allow you to be in charge of how much sugar you use.

Here are my Top Tips for cutting back on sugar

When I get that sugar craving I like to snack on healthier sweet snacks such as our Love Vegan bars as they contain no hidden sugars, only natrually occuring sugars from the fruit we used to blend with healthy nuts and seeds. I also like to snack on fresh berries and nuts. These are all healthier choices and keep your energy levels up for longer than when you eat processed foods with added sugars.

Savoury snacks are perfect choices, such as hummus and other savoury dips, with veggies sticks or homemade crackers. These will help you feel fuller for longer. Nut butter and other healthy spreads are also a lovely treat that are nutritious and filling.

Using natural sugars such as maple syrup and agave syrup, sweetners and xyloit are the best way to make and enjoy your cakes and sweet treats. They will still taste just as good but you’ll be cutting back on lots of refined unhealthy sugar. Have a read here to understand more about the difference between natural v refined sugars.

Most of the recipes I share are healthy options with a few snacks and treats that aren’t so healthy and best used for a celebration or treat, but have a look through and pick out your favourites. You can also get lots of recipes and top tips by visiting our love vegan Instagram page.

Breakfast

Sweet or savoury? Choose from healthy oat based baked doughnuts, go easy on the topping if you like - to make it super healthy or if you’re more of a savoury morning person then these homemade baked beans are low in sugar and delicious.

Lunch

Hot or cold? Choose from a tofu kebab or classic avocado on toast, both filling, super simple and very tasty.

Dinner

Quick and easy or a little more time? You can whip up this Mac and greens pasta quite quickly or if you have more time this hot pot is perfect to make with lots left over to freeze for another day.

Snack Time!

Why not enjoy a homemade energy ball for your mid-morning or afternoon pick-me-up and put your feet up in the evening with a delicious cookie!

We also have our Love Vegan snack bars to enjoy too. Choose from a healthier no-sugar bar at around 100 cals per bar or for a more indulgent treat our chocolate bars contain around 200 cals per bar.

Good luck with your journey to sugar free, let me know how you get on!
