If you’ve never tried using chickpeas in a sweet dish then this is a good place to start. The cacao disguises the taste of the chickpeas (which on their own are quite bland anyway) and the maple gives it just the right amount of sweetness, but feel free to add more to suit your taste buds.

Ingredients

1 tin chickpeas drained and rinsed throughly 3 times (save the chickpea water to make these meringues or fluff)

6 tbsp cacao powder

4-6 tbsp maple syrup (depending on how sweet you’d like the choc hummus)

Pinch salt

Up to 2 tbsp water to get the right consistency

Method

  • Simply add all of the ingredients to a food processor and blend for 1 minute

  • Remove the lid and scrape down the edges and blend agin, you may need to do this several times.

  • If the hummus is still stodgy after you have done the blending process a few times add a tbsp of water and blend until it has started to loosen, once this has happened the chickpeas well become really soft and you will get a lovely smooth consistency.

  • Place the hummus in a clean sterilised jar, store in the fridge enjoy within 3 days.

  • We like ours on toast or crumpets, to top cakes biscuits… or straight from the spoon!

If you do make this then I hope you love it
