There’s nothing better than homemade hummus. A lot of shop bought hummus is quite grainy in texture and the ones that taste good are so expensive. You’ll be happy to know you can achieve the best tasting and quality of hummus in just 5 minutes at home with 6 ingredients and a blender. How good is that? Here’s how to do it.

Ingredients

1 400g tin chickpeas, drained - save the liquid for another recipe such as this (get the best quality chickpeas that you can afford as it will make all the difference to the smooth hummus you’re trying to achieve)

85g or about 1/4 cup tahini

Juice of 1 lemon

1 clove garlic - grated

1/2 teaspoon cumin

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil

You may also need up to 4 tablespoons of fresh water

Method

  • Begin by preparing the tahini to allow it to infuse the lemon flavour

  • Add the tahini and lemon juice to the blender and whizz for 1 minute to create a nice smooth mixture (you may need to scrape down the sides a few times)

  • Now add the garlic, cumin and olive oil and whizz up again for another 1 minute

  • Drain the chickpeas (save the water and see notes below)

  • Rinse the chickpeas really well and then add them to the blender and whizz up again for another minute

  • You may notice that the hummus seems a little grainy at this stage (especially if you don’t have a high speed blender)

  • If you still have chunky/grainy bits or if the hummus is smooth but still a little thick, then add a tablespoon of water at a time up, whilst blending at the same time (to 4 tablespoons) until you reach the desired consistency.

  • Add salt and pepper to taste and then pop the hummus into an airtight container and it will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.

NOTE: You can use chickpea brine/water also know as aquafaba to make other delicious recipes such as this marshmallow fluff or meringues

If you do make this then I hope you love it
